The Brief

The owners of a period property in the West Midlands wanted to make their home warmer and quieter without altering its character. The original windows were an important part of the building and, in a conservation setting, replacing them was not an option. Their concerns were persistent road noise, cold draughts around the frames and rooms that were difficult to keep warm. They asked us for a solution that would improve comfort while keeping the existing windows completely intact.

What We Did

Our work on this project included:

  • Survey and assessment: We measured each window carefully and assessed the reveals so the new units would sit neatly within the existing openings.
  • Discreet slimline design: We specified slimline secondary glazing with fine sightlines, chosen to stay visually unobtrusive and to suit the period style of the property.
  • Fitted inside the existing windows: The secondary glazing was installed on the inside face of the original windows, adding a second pane and an insulating air gap without touching the original frames.
  • Noise and draught reduction: The additional pane and sealed air gap were used to cut road noise and close off the draughts that had been letting cold air in.
  • Easy operation retained: We used sliding and openable panels so the windows can still be opened, cleaned and used as normal.
  • Original windows preserved: Throughout the work the original windows were left fully in place and unaltered, which is well suited to conservation and listed homes.

The Result

The finished rooms are noticeably warmer and quieter, with the draughts around the windows removed and outside noise much reduced. Because the secondary glazing sits discreetly behind the original windows, the appearance of the property is unchanged from both inside and out. The owners kept the character of their period home while gaining the comfort and warmth of modern glazing.

Scope: Slimline secondary glazing fitted to multiple windows, all completed with the original windows left completely intact.
